European citizens and civil society organisations expect the European Council, Commission and Parliament to match their words with actions for citizens to effectively participate in shaping the future of Europe: the crucial months of the Conference on the Future of Europe are ahead of us.

With the goal of demonstrating how self-organisation and empowerment of European citizens and civil society matter for the future of democracy across Europe, we encourage civil society organisations and citizens participants of the Conference on the future of Europe to answer our new survey.

A permanent European citizens’ assembly would be an audacious move towards the building – and vitalizing - of European democracy.

On 9 May 2022, the year-long Conference on the Future of Europe concluded and published its work. While the final report of the Conference provides an ambitious programme for Europe, the follow-up remains to be seen and implemented. 

In view of the upcoming European Council meeting of June 23rd/24th, 2022, which discusses the follow-up to the Conference on the Future of Europe, Citizens Take over Europe - a coalition of 60 European civil society organisations - calls for European democracy to take a quantum leap and empower European citizens.
